Taking my 10 year old daughter along to Haddenham Rollers on a Friday night was a hit of nostalgia, reminding me of skating around my school gym, in my peppermint green skates with pineapples on!
Off course the skates are much flashier nowadays, and in some cases literally flashing!
The team behind Haddenham Rollers are Charlie and Emma Wood, who revived the sessions much to everyone’s delight. When we moved to Haddenham ten years ago, expecting our first child, we looked forward to the days when they’d be big enough. Sadly the sessions stopped but when the former organisers tried to sell the old skates, Charlie and Emma stepped in and offered to run it again.
They’ve invested in a whole load of new skates, in a range of (adjustable) sizes, all ready for those who don’t have their own and available to hire for £5.
There are two sessions, 4:30-5:30 for the under 10’s and 5:30-6:30 for over 10’s. They now run weekly, and once a month there is even an adult session with a bar!
Refreshments are available, from hot dogs and fish finger sandwiches through to home baked goods, courtesy of Charlie. There are even bags of sugar free sweets on offer as well as drinks for adults and children.
Entry is £6 for the hour’s skating (either cash or contactless) and although parents need to stay for the younger children, it’s a really good atmosphere and gives us grown ups a chance to catch up outside of half finished conversations on the school run!
Oh, and the kids have a lot of fun too and it wears them out, so wins all round!
