The Story Museum gets ready for a day of frabjous fun for all the family!
The Story Museum is delighted to announce the highly anticipated return of Alice’s Day, a spectacular city-wide celebration dedicated to the whimsical world of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. On Saturday 1st July, families and literary enthusiasts alike are invited to embark on a magical journey down the rabbit hole and immerse themselves in the enchanting tales of Lewis Carroll’s seminal children’s classic.
Alice’s Day at The Story Museum has become an annual tradition that celebrates the enduring charm and imagination of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. This year, we are thrilled to bring a host of exciting activities and captivating experiences for visitors of all ages.
For one day only, Oxford will come to life with Alice-themed theatre, film screenings, crafting, dance, lectures, and tours. The festival is produced by The Story Museum with partners including Oxford University Museum of Natural History, Museum of Oxford, Oxford Botanic Garden, Christ Church, Bodleian Libraries, Alice’s Shop, Oxford Festival of Arts, The Lewis Carroll Society, Oxford Children’s Book Group, Oxford Water Walks and The Ultimate Picture Palace.
This year’s Alice’s Day revolves around the theme of ‘The Great Outdoors,’ offering visitors a chance to embrace the wonders of nature and wildlife. A wide range of family-friendly events and activities are spread throughout the city, and the best part is that many of them are free, without the need for advance booking.
Highlights include:
The Bees
A multi-sensory performance from outdoor theatre specialists Artizani, where you are invited to wander amongst a honey-perfumed colony and discover multiple hives, each hiding a unique unexpected world.
Wonderland Characters and Cards
Help Alice find the White Rabbit in the streets of Oxford, shuffle a human pack of cards, or seek advice from the Caterpillar – Curious Company bring their unique brand of quirky and delightful street theatre to Alice’s Day
Professor Slug’s House of Bugs
An interactive show packed full of colourful puppets, catchy songs, and educational info about the wonderful world of bugs.
Older Alice fans will want to stop by The Weston Library who will be hosting a series of lectures by The Lewis Carroll Society, offering intellectual stimulation and insights into the works of Lewis Carroll. For those who prefer a hands-on experience, the Oxford Botanic Garden will be running an Alice-themed cocktail making session where attendees can learn the art of mixology in a delightful botanical setting. And for cinema enthusiasts, The Ultimate Picture Palace will be holding a special screening of The Hunting of The Snark accompanied by a Q&A session with director Simon DaVison and actor Corinne Furman, providing a unique opportunity to delve into the film’s creation and engage with the talented individuals behind it.
Finally, for Alice’s Day only, children get in free to The Story Museum’s galleries, including the Whispering Wood, Enchanted Library, The Portal, and a brand-new temporary exhibition ‘Brilli-ANT’ which explores how young people can tackle climate anxiety through discovering stories old and new.
Senior Producer for The Story Museum Ameneh Enayat says:
“It’s always a joy to bring this much-loved story to life for the people of Oxford to enjoy. Alice’s Day has become a firm fixture in the city’s calendar and we’re proud that the festival regularly sees people travelling from across the world to join in the celebrations. We’re confident that this year’s programme will delight and entertain in equal measures, giving families a day they’re guaranteed to remember for years to come!”
