Clean up your home office in 5 quick and easy steps

If you’re still working on fall cleaning (or haven’t started yet), your home office may be last on the list. If you work there every day, your desk is likely in dire need of sanitizing, not to mention all those crumbs on the keyboard. We’ll walk you through it and before you know it, your home office space will be sparkling again!

Whether your home office is a separate room or a corner office in the kitchen, if you work there regularly, a lot of germs and waste will accumulate. Office clearance London, of course, takes time that most of us don’t have. But if you can follow these five quick steps and a little routine maintenance, your home office will shine every time and stay that way.

Step one: Wipe down your office chair

You probably won’t forget to mop the floor of your home office. However, dust and debris can also settle into your chair’s upholstery. Use the vacuum cleaner brush to take care of it. You can also use the same accessory to clean curtains or lampshades.

You can also use a fabric cleaner to treat stains on your chair after vacuuming. Just check the upholstery label; it should contain instructions on how to properly clean your chair. You can disinfect all complex plastic parts, such as arms, legs and wheels, with regular dish soap and water.

If you’d rather have something more portable to use on furniture instead of lugging around a full-size vacuum cleaner, the Bissell Little Green Multi-Purpose Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner. Not only will it make quick work of your chair or other fabric, but it also stores an upholstery cleaner so you can spray it on stains.

It’s also perfect for upholstering the car or cleaning up pet messes on the carpet.

Second: Safely clean your electronics

You probably touch your keyboard more than anything else in your home office. Also, if you regularly swallow your lunch while working, there are probably a lot of crumbs between the keys. (Yep!) Keyboard cleaner is the surest way to get rid of all the food, dust, and grime between those keys.

The rest of your electronics should also be on your routine cleaning list. Invest in a screen cleaner to keep your computer, laptop, tablet and TV screen clean and free of fingerprints and debris.

Don’t forget to wipe other accessories too, such as the printer, mouse, power strips, and cords. If you have a headset for calls, pay special attention to it, as it can harbour many pathogens from your face and mouth. Endust Wipes are a convenient and super quick way to clean up all of the above. Gently wipe everything down, then let it air dry.

Step three: dust all surfaces

A blue portable mini humidifier is on a table next to a laptop.

Dust likes to collect on all surfaces, including your desk, electronics, shelves and tables. A dusty desk is not the most inviting place to spend your days, especially if you have allergies.

Additionally, 2/3 of the dust in your home typically comes from outside, which has the potential to carry pathogens.

A damp microfiber cloth or paper towel is all you need to get rid of the top layer of dust on your desk, shelves and other surfaces. Always work from the top down, because when you dust everything floats down.

You can then use disinfectant wipes to get rid of any of those pathogens we mentioned earlier. Don’t forget table legs, light fixtures, picture frames, blinds, window sills and ceiling fan blades.

If you suffer from allergies, you may want to invest in a small portable humidifier, like this option from MOVTIP. It has two misting modes and an automatic shut-off, and at just over five inches tall, it won’t take up much space on your desk.

Step Four: Decorate those Windows

A decorative window wall mirror hangs above an entry table.

If you’re lucky enough to have a window in your home office, let in some healthy, natural light. Just grab the glass cleaner, a microfiber cloth or a paper towel and start spraying!

No windows in your home office? How about a mirror that looks like one? Adding a mirror will make your space feel more open and a little less claustrophobic—and you can clean it the same way you would a window.

If you want something even more realistic, but much more affordable, get a wall sticker of a window with a great view, like this fake seascape from Amtoodopin. The best part about this option is that you never have to clean it!

Step Five: Treat that soil

If your home office is carpeted, now is the time to get out the vacuum cleaner and sweep the floor thoroughly. For hardwood, vinyl, or any other floor, grab a broom or stick vacuum.

If it’s been a while since your office floor has been cleaned, move everything you can to another room so you can touch the floor as much as possible. Remove all furniture from the walls if you can and sweep behind them.

Grab your Swiffer or mop and bucket and give it a shine. Be sure to follow the cleaning instructions for your specific type of floor. After this deep cleaning, try vacuuming your desk every week.

For maintaining hardwood, vinyl and other types of hard surface floors, we highly recommend the Swiffer Sweeper Two-in-One. It’s a vacuum and a mop, so you can sweep and/or shine your floor every week.
